Catcher interference or batter interference
The umpire points at the plate and calls interference. The award is not the same for the catcher and the batter.
Situation
During the swing or the pitch, the umpire calls interference at home plate. Name who interfered before you pick a button.
What happens on the field
- Catcher interference: the catcher, or the catcher's gear, gets in the way of the batter's swing. The batter is usually awarded first base, and runners forced to move go with them.
- Batter interference: the batter gets in the way of a play, often a throw or the catcher's attempt on a runner. The batter is out.
- Fan interference is a different call. Do not use either of these for a spectator.
How the book should look
- Catcher interference: the batter reaches. It is not an at-bat, a walk, or a hit.
- Batter interference: the batter is out, and the at-bat counts.
A common miss is scoring a hit by pitch, a walk, or a strikeout because those buttons are closer.
In DugoutDesk
- Open Pitch menu and tap Catcher interference or Batter interference.
- If the offense declines a catcher's-interference award and takes the play, score the play that happened. There is no separate decline button.
Pitch-by-pitch scoring is free. Hit spray is coach premium and is not part of either interference call.
Ruleset notes
Who may decline the award, and what happens to other runners, is not identical in USA Softball, USSSA, NFHS, Little League, PONY, and Babe Ruth.
Record the umpire's award. The app does not certify the rulebook, and it will not undo a declined award for you.
