Wild pitch or passed ball
A runner moves up, or scores, on a pitch that was not put in play. The argument is who gets charged.
Situation
A pitch gets past the catcher, or is not handled cleanly, and at least one runner advances. Nobody batted the ball fair.
What happens on the field
- Wild pitch: the pitch was one the catcher could not reasonably stop. Charge the pitcher.
- Passed ball: the catcher should have stopped or caught it. Charge the catcher.
- The runner's advance is the same either way. Only the credit changes. It is not a hit or a steal unless that is a different play.
How the book should look
- Charge one or the other, not both, and not a single.
- A run scored this way is not an RBI.
A common miss is scoring a stolen base, or a single, because a run crossed the plate.
In DugoutDesk
- If you have not logged the pitch yet, open Pitch menu and tap Wild pitch or Passed ball. That logs a ball, then opens the play dialog.
- If you already logged the pitch, tap a runner and choose Wild pitch or Passed ball. Do not use the pitch menu as well, or you will add another ball.
- The play dialog advances every runner one base, and scores a runner from third, by default. Change a base only if a runner should stay.
Pitch-by-pitch scoring is free. Hit spray is coach premium and does not apply. An illegal pitch is a different call. Do not use these buttons for it.
Ruleset notes
The pitcher-versus-catcher split is the usual one in USA Softball, USSSA, NFHS, and baseball books. Confirm a borderline pitch with the umpire, then record that credit. This is not a rules certification.
